52Frames 2020-06 – Rule of Thirds

The theme for this week’s 52frames challenge is Rule of Thirds.

I’m participating to a test-drive of “photo mentorships” – more on that later, probably, it’s still in closed beta 😉 Buuut part of the gist of the task for this week was to try and get the composition “right” in camera, in particular when it comes to framing the right things – not too much, and not too little. It was, incidently, a very interesting exercise – despite the snow that accompanied me for most of my walk today. And the constraint was to post it “straight out of the camera”, which is… a challenge for me 🙂

I’d like to say that this picture is exactly one of these “straight out of the camera” pictures – but I can’t say it is – there’s been a bit of fixing horizontals, a bit of cropping, and a bit of color edit on this one.

The “extra credit” for this week was “street photography”. I must admit that I did hesitate claiming it – for sure this doesn’t fit the “canons” on street photography. But, to me, street photography is about people and humanity, and I find the act of adding that poppy where it is to fit very well with that idea 🙂

52Frames 2020-05 – Shoot from Above

This week has been somewhat complicated; I had a couple of plans for a bit of exploration to get the “Shoot from Above” picture for 52Frames, but neither panned out. Buuuut I took the train around golden hour the other day, and I snagged that one. A bit of cropping to center the center, and a Google predefined filter later, boom, I have a submission for 52Frames.

Which makes my streak running to 5, which means that THINGS ARE GETTING REAL – now if I miss a week, it DOES feel like I’m losing something 😉 Which is exactly the point, I presume.

52Frames 2020-02 – Leading Lines

I didn’t know exactly what to do for the second 52Frames theme of the year, Leading Lines – but last week I went for a tiny photo walk near the lake. A friend of mine had lent me his Sony NEX-7 so that I could have a look at the form factor and at the general feel of it – so that was an extra motivation to go out and shoot. I arrived at the lake at the same time as the boat, so I took a few pictures; I also experimented with the spyglass that’s nearby, but I didn’t manage to get something convincing leading-lines-wise.

On the post-processing side, of note – the pink/red nuances in the sky were there, but I spent some time making them somewhat more obvious; that’s probably a bit more “creative reality” than I usually do, but I don’t hate the result 🙂

52Frames 2020-01 – Self-portrait

New year means – trying once again to restart 52Frames, and hope that it sticks, and if it doesn’t stick, well, it will have lasted for as long as it will have had, and hopefully I’ll get a few reasonable pictures out of it.

Traditionally, the first 52Frames theme of the year is the self-portrait – it’s actually a pretty good idea to kick-off the year, I think 🙂

Last year, Pierre bought a few Yongnuo 300-III LED panels with which I hadn’t yet taken the time to play. So this self-portrait is my first foray into “proper” portrait photography with a three-point lighting – main light left and above, secondary light right and a bit lower, and light behind to separate the subject (err, me) from the backdrop (err, my black curtain in the TV room.)

I then ran a few edits on Darktable – fixing the exposition and whatnot, removing a couple of really major skin blotches (considering what’s left, I’ll let you imagine what I removed 😉 ), and SHIP IT!

And I decided I was happy enough with it to change my 7+-year old Facebook profile photo – so you may have seen that picture already, but now you get a tiny bit of behind the scenes too 🙂

52Frames, weeks 17, 18 and 19

I haven’t posted my 52Frames pictures in the past three weeks over here, so let’s fix that!

Week 17 – Upside Down

Fine, this one I had already posted when I talked about the Zürich Botanical Garden. Reflections were explicitly on topic for the “Upside Down” theme, and I accidentally found that one, so there it is. I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t get a cleaner reflection – but it’s pretty hard to find a ripple-free moment at a time where there’s a lot of visitors, including some who throw stones in the pond 🙂

Week 18 – The Dark Side

I’ll admit a lack of time, inspiration and motivation for The Dark Side theme – especially since I hurt myself that week! (I sprained my ankle, I’m fine, but it’s still SUPER annoying.) So I snapped that one and called it “The Dark Side of Holidays” 😉 With a bonus dark chocolate line-up 😛

Week 19 – Textures

I was actually looking forward to the Texture theme, because I was envisioning a “hunt for textures” photo-walk, which, considering the picture of Week 18… kind of did not happen. Thankfully, SOMEONE has been baking and working on their buttercream piping skills, so I got a yummy texture picture for their efforts 😉

52Frames – Week 15 – Blue Hour

I’ve been waiting for reasonable weather all week last week to shoot Blue Hour for 52Frames. That… kind of didn’t happen, so Sunday evening came and I still didn’t have a shot. I was determined to not let my streak end, so this one is somewhat of a placeholder, I guess – it’s not what I would have wanted to get for this theme, but it’s what I got!

I had a first pretty bad shot with a bike traveling in that red/copper light, so I waited a bit for another bike to appear, and it worked out 🙂 The weather on top of the Uetliberg was actually pretty nice, in a foggy/ethereal way.

I don’t think it was quite the blue hour yet when I shot the picture – I compensated a bit in post-processing by giving a bit of a bluer tone, as well as boosting the reds to have a better contrast on the light in the street.

52Frames – Week 14 – Food Photography

The theme for last week’s 52Frames was Food Photography. I’ve taken enough pictures for our food blog that I know what I like and how to get at least decent food pictures. Since natural light is the main ingredient of that, and since we don’t have that much of that at dinner time, it kind of meant “lunch picture”. Our typical meals may not necessarily be the most appetizing because they may lack structure, so I chose to go for a simple one, with literally no cooking and just setting things up on the plate – avocado and salmon 🙂
